From ages 3 to 21, if your child has special education needs, he or she may be entitled to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) under the federal guidelines in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and New York State laws. There are many diagnoses and conditions that may qualify your child for special education.

For your child to have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), he or she must have a condition that adversely affects his or her educational performance, and the condition must fit within one of a number of New York disability classifications as defined in section 200.1(zz) of the New York Regulations of the Commissioner of Education as listed below.
